An interface design for a structured computer-mediated communication tool for elementary school students: pull-down versus explicit menus.

The article examines the effectiveness of using a structured computer-mediated communication (CMC) tool for elementary school students in Great Britain. To foster and guide students' online interactions, several researchers suggested that CMC tools be structured by integrating a restricted set of sentence openers. In guiding elementary school students, complete sentences with blanks to fill in instead of sentence openers were used in structuring a CMC tool. And four categories of predefined on-task statements were embedded in the CMC collaborative learning system component.
